Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has a lot going against it. The first game in an unproven franchise, the name certainly doesn't inspire the love of fans. Screenshots, too, also don't help Reckoning resonate with gamers, as they don't convey the depth of the experience. The question, then, is what can I say to convince you to give this a shot -- that you should check out this when it's released during the first week of February 2012?==========
I could try and convince you by telling you that Amalur is a world steeped in lore. Created in conjunction with famed fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, the background, history and cultural richness of Amalur is readily apparent after a few moments with it. It's high fantasy stuff, but it's darker than the likes of Fable, and more in line with the morally grey world of Bethesda's Tamriel. If you care about story there are over 20 hours of story, and more than 50 with all the side quests. Even after a few hours I felt as if I'd barely scratched the surface of the game's content. Amalur is a world you can lose yourself in.
The abundance of quests in Amalur doesn't limit you to a linear storyline, so if you're a fan of branching out you can really choose to live a life of contradictions. My necromancer-rogue hybrid was a thief, and while he ultimately does the right thing when people's lives are on the line, he also loves to steal. One minute I find myself on epic quest lines, out to save the world, the next I'm working for a cult of thieves, stealing treasures from priests. Don't judge me; my character has issues from growing up poor! Ehem, the point I'm trying to make is that the large number of quests and side-quests, including what look to be great faction quests for the likes of thieves, give you the freedom to tell your own story.
I guess I could also tell you that everything in Reckoning is fleshed out into a surprisingly complex system. Smithing isn't an affair of just pressing a button in order to make money, but involves a multitude of component parts, allowing you to craft weapons and armor and progress your skill with new recipes. The abundant random item drops in Reckoning can be sold, broken down into parts for crafting, or donned on your character. Essentially, loot can make you feel richer in a number of ways.
Potion making also offers a lot of additional distractions. Every few feet in the environment another piece of flora appears for you to raid for potion ingredients. If you're the type who can't wander around without collecting everything, the world of Amalur is going to grab you and never let go.
Screenshots and videos don't do it justice, so hear me out when I say that the combat in Amalur is surprisingly involved. Unlike Fable where fights are mostly a one button affair, Amalur gives you two weapons you can quickly switch from, a dash and a multitude of magic powers. It never quite reaches God of War levels of action, but the fights I played remained intense, skill-testing affairs nonetheless.
Up until now I think Reckoning's sounded like it has a lot of the same conventions as many other action RPGs, but it also takes into account the changing times. More specifically, it doesn't tie you down to your character choices. You can re-allocate your hard-earned ability points with ease, taking your character from a hardcore mage to a melee-focused beefcake with a few steps. You can also pick a destiny that combines the various fantasy archetypes, creating warrior-mages or rogue-mages. For instance the character I played was a mix between a necromancer and a rogue, throwing poisoned chakras into the air while blinking through the environment and summoning skeletons. I enjoyed my character and the combat? options, but it's comforting to know that 30 hours into Reckoning I could mix things up if I get bored.
I used to be like you. I would see the headlines for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and gloss over them, maybe give the first few paragraphs a read before moving onto a franchise I recognized more. But I'm telling you – imploring you – to give Reckoning a chance after it comes out. It's beyond me to accurately portray the depth of its content, and the love that it's crafted with, but I hope I've spurred your interest. If you're an RPG fan you owe it to yourself to start caring about this game and spreading the word.
